Treatment
The best course of treatment for acne is an all encompassing one, which addresses each of the three factors that collectively cause breakouts. Accordingly, proper acne treatment should:
Improve exfoliation,
Neutralize the infectious P. acnes bacteria, and
Control hormonally-driven oil production.
This approach ensures that existing acne lesions are healed and new lesions are prevented from forming.

Many acne products on the market are formulated to take advantage of a person's desperation to aggressively attack lesions. There are a host of products on the self that claim to "zap zits" or "dry-up acne overnight." The active ingredient in the vast majority of these products is either rubbing alcohol or witch hazel – which are both known skin irritants. These irritants often exacerbate the condition and don't really address the underlying causes of acne. To view a list of harmful ingredients found in skin care products, click here.

The key to healing and preventing acne is to follow a comprehensive skincare regime that is gentle on the skin - as opposed to assaulting already agitated lesions in the pursuit of instant results. One can expect significant improvement after 6 to 8 weeks of gentle, systematic treatment. Here are our recommended treatment options:

1. Improve exfoliation.
Alpha and beta hydroxy acids: Creams and gels with these acids exfoliate dead skin cells deep within the pore. These substances can also reshape the pore lining to improve the flow of oil through it – minimizing back-up. Try EverWell's Anti-Aging Overnight Replenisher, which contains a generous 8% concentration of acne fighting alpha hydroxy acid.
Scrubs: Granular-based scrubs can prevent surface dead skin cells from slipping into the pores. It is important to avoid abrasive granular scrubs that can tear the delicate skin tissue. EverWell's Toasted Coconut Sugar Scrub is an ideal option, as the sugar granules effectively exfoliate and then melt into the skin to deliver hydration.

2. Neutralize the infectious P. acnes bacteria.
Cleansers: Use a high-end detergent-free cleanser to remove surface bacteria and build-up. The gentler the cleanser, the better. EverWell's Soft as Silk Cleansing Milk is about as gentle and effective as they come.
Topical & oral antibiotics: Antibiotics such as benzoyl peroxide, clindamycin tetracycline and minocycline, are commonly prescribed to curb the growth of bacteria. To learn more about these antibiotics, visit our Ingredient Critique section. Please consult your doctor before starting any medication.

3. Control hormonally-driven oil production.
Earth clay masks: Regular use of oil absorbing earth clay masks is a simple and effective way of preventing build-up of excess oils in the skin-pores. Try EverWell's Lemon Meringue Purifying Mask.
Prescription oral medications: Birth control pills, corticosteroids and antiandrogens suppress hormonal activity and lower oil production. The drug Accutane practically halts the production of oil in the sebaceous glands but has a number of potentially serious side effects. Please consult your doctor before starting any medication.
