Cause
Oily skin is caused by heightened hormonal activity in the body, which stimulates and enlarges the oil secreting glands (sebaceous glands) in the skin-pores, causing them to produce an excess amount of oil.
Under normal circumstances, the sebaceous gland inside the skin-pores makes an oily substance called sebum, which mixes with water within the skin's surface layer to form a protective surface barrier, called the stratum corneum. This protective barrier prevents water from evaporating from the underlying skin tissues.
However, a high level of hormonal activity in the body can stimulate and enlarge the sebaceous glands, causing them produce more oil than is needed for maintenance of this protective barrier. As a result, the skin can take on a greasy, coarse and dull appearance. If left untreated, oily skin can contribute to the formation of acne.
For some people, heightened hormonal activity can be brought on by pregnancy, puberty, menstruation, certain medications and even stress. For others, highly active hormones are an inherited genetic trait. Regardless of the reason behind highly active hormones, oily skin is treatable and does not have to be a permanent reality.
