Treatment
Many products that are marketed to treat oily skin contain harsh ingredients, like surfactants, alcohol and witch hazel. Skincare products containing such ingredients are likely to strip the skin of the stratum corneum, its natural protective barrier. This actually exacerbates oily skin by stimulating the sebaceous glands to increase their production of sebum.

Sebum plays an important role when it comes to the health of our skin. Accordingly, the proper treatment of oily skin requires that we do not cause a deficiency of sebum in the skin pores; rather, the goal should be to return the amount of sebum to an optimal level. This calls for a gentle approach that incorporates the following steps:

1. Cleanse the skin gently
Use a high-end detergent free cleanser to remove surface bacteria and build-up. The gentler the cleanser, the better. EverWell's Soft as Silk Cleansing Milk is about as gentle and effective as they come.

2. Remove Excess Oil
Regular use of oil absorbing earth clay masks is a simple and effective way of preventing the back-up of excess oils in the skin-pores. Try EverWell's natural earth Lemon Meringue Purifying Mask.

3. Control hormonally-driven oil production
Birth control pills, corticosteroids and antiandrogens suppress hormonal activity and lower oil production. The drug Accutane practically halts the production of oil in the sebaceous glands but has a number of potentially serious side effects. Please consult your doctor before starting any medication.

4. Avoid the use of harsh skincare products
Discontinue using lower grade skincare products with harsh ingredients so as not to damage the skin's protective barrier (stratum corneum). In particular, avoid detergent based cleansers, alcohol based astringents and other harmful skincare products. To view a list of harmful ingredients found in skin care products, click here.
